A New Curriculum for Arkansas Student

The Arkansas State Board of Education approved the Common Core Curriculum for all Arkansas Schools in July 2010. This new national curriculum, which was developed by Chief State School Officers, was designed to prepare students for college and career readiness. Unlike the current Arkansas State Frameworks, this new Common Core Curriculum has fewer yet more rigorous standards for students. The standards are internationally benchmarked to ensure that we are testing our students on a level that will help them compete globally. Students are expected to have thorough, concentrated learning experiences on more difficult skills. When compared with our present Arkansas framework, many of the skills will be taught two grade levels below what is currently expected. The timeline set forth by the Arkansas Department of Education will required grade K-2 to begin teaching this curriculum in the 2011-2012 school year, grades 3-8 in the 2012-2013 school year, and 9-12 in the 2013-2014 school year. In 2014-2015 a new national assessment will replace the Arkansas Benchmark exam. This exam will be administered on the computer for grades 6-12 and K-5 will take the newly created exams in the traditional paper and pencil method. Fountain Lake School has embraced this significant challenge because the standards will better prepare students for college and the workforce, making them nationally and internationally competitive graduates. While teachers, administrators, and students will have to adapt to new learnings, our district has some of the most qualified staff and students who will be up to the challenge.
